3ROCKD-ETHIOPIA

Bullet points

3RockD African communities will serve as some of the best examples of self-sustainable communities that manage scarce water resources, creates its own power and food, and transforms waste into power.

Ethiopia is one of the world’s oldest nations in continuous existence, and hosts Africa’s second-largest population. While the country is currently very poor, it has posted some of the highest growth rates in Africa since peace was established in 2000. In 2008 the country posted a growth rate of 8.4%, and projections for 2009 are estimated at 7.9, despite the economic downturn. These indicators are the highest for any non-oil-dependent African nation, and it’s average 10% annual growth rate from 2003-2008 reflect strong investments in infrastructure and governmental reform. Combined with its long history of independence, culture, and emphasis on educational achievement, Ethiopian society, environment, and culture are changing rapidly. This change has placed pressures on national and local governments, as in other rapidly industrializing and urbanizing countries.

These challenges have created a unique opportunity for 3rd Rock Development to use its expertise, networks, and models to build communities that support citizen participation, protect environmental resources, and contribute towards a sustainable economy. While in its conceptual stages, the 3rd Rock Development Ethiopia project will build on Ethiopia’s rapid growth trajectory by mobilizing its rich culture, its globally renowned history, and its enthusiastic youth to build livable, sustainable, and environmentally innovative
